Rules: The car had to be sold brand new in 1966
I haven’t done one of these in a while and thought today would be as good a day as any to bring it back! For me it is a GT350. Arguably the greatest Mustang of all time. I can’t think many American cars that are better. The GT350 is a true legend.

Depending on the amount of annual sunlight, maybe one of these...
It’s also one of the better-looking years for the Rambler Marlin.
Also, the price point had just dropped.

The Fairlane and Galaxie had just, in my opinion, taken a turn for the slightly uglier (stacked headlights on them don’t work for me, can’t say why), and Marlin vs. the last year of the wraparound glass Barracuda leaves you with mostly a budget choice: little slant-six or small V8 fastback, or fullsize big V8 fastback, each with revolutionary suspension elements and great ride! Of course, in the case of the Marlin, the unique suspension is using the motor mounts as part of the suspension, sort of. Because AMC were a bunch of nutbars. Outside of fastbacks, ‘66 is a good year for the F-series, and in a multi-car house I’d almost certainly have one of those too.

If it HAS to be a 1966 model, give me a 911. I’m typically a muscle car guy, but I prefer the late late 60s and early 70s stuff.
But.. If I stop by a Chevrolet dealer and they have a left over 1965 Impala SS.. I’m getting that. My first car was going to be a ‘65 SS, but it got sold when my folks split. I’ve wanted one ever since.

The Barracuda is more elegant, and in some respects better engineered, but it would depend on if I had kids, how many, and how well I actually fit in Dart/Valiant platform cars. The Marlin, despite its two-door configuration, is bigger, does have a full rear seat, and dat 401... But wait! you might say. What about the Charger? Yeah, that would be the sane choice, so pfft.

‘66 Chevrolet Corvair Corsa Coupe. Rear wheel drive, 4 wheel independent suspension, awesome handling for its day
if you invested in a stout sway (anti-roll) bar
. I’m assuming I’d still be living in LA, and the Corvair was a great canyon car. And in those days, we still had the old Grapevine between LA and the Central Valley (I-5 was just being built), about 50-60 miles of twisty excellence.

From a practical standpoint, and with the hindsight of many years of Dukes of Hazzard reruns, and given the slow mouldering of that platform in some relatively dull Buicks and Cadillacs, sure. I’m not sure 1966 me would have made that judgment, though, even if 8 year old me in the mid 90s thought the 60s Charger was one of the best looking cars he’d ever seen. Assume if I were a young guy either with a family or with hopes of a family in future in ‘66, though. This new Toronado thing - look at all these features! Quieted “no-draft” cabin? Drivetrain isolation? This interesting new FWD thing? And look, they were even forward-thinking enough to have a second door handle for the rear seat! What I’m saying is, in ‘66 and from a personal luxury car-with-options standpoint, this thing looks amazing. The Charger looks more, well, normal.
